The New Zealand openers, Devon Conway and captain Tom Latham, broke a plethora of records with their 323-run partnership in the Mount Maunganui Test match against the West Indies.
Latham and Conway put on 323 in 86.4 overs for the opening wickets after the former won the toss and opted to bat against the West Indies at the Bay Oval. By the time Kemar Roach dismissed Latham for 137 (246 balls, 15 fours, one six), they had already put on the highest opening stand in the history of the World Test Championship: they went past Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal’s 317.
Conway batted until stumps to remain unbeaten on 178 (279 balls, 25 fours) along with night-watch Jacob Duffy (nine). New Zealand finished the day on 334-1.

Conway and Latham also put on the second-highest Test opening stand for New Zealand, after Glenn Turner and Terry Jarvis’ famous nine-hour marathon partnership of 387 at Georgetown in 1971/72.

Latham and Conway also became the first opening pair to put on 300 in a Test innings in New Zealand as well as the the first pair to put on 300 in a first-class innings at the Bay Oval.
Overall, this was the 16th time an opening pair put on 300 for the first wicket in Test cricket. The 323-run partnership is joint-12th on the all-time list: Latham and Conway are tied with Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes, whose stand was the first in excess of 300 in Test cricket.
