KKR have a clear winner in post-Rahane succession plan

Rahane took charge of the franchise last year, and with the leadership role now vacant, several players have emerged as potential contenders to succeed him.

The obvious successor

Rinku Singh

Rinku Singh is young, promising and looks certain to be with KKR for the long haul, something every franchise looks for in a captain, and something the side arguably lacked when they appointed Ajinkya Rahane. Having been with the franchise since 2018, Rinku knows the set-up inside out, has built a strong working relationship with the coaching staff, including Abhishek Nayar, Andre Russell and Ryan ten Doeschate, and has grown into one of the team's biggest crowd favourites. At 28, he is entering his prime, and unlike Rahane, his place in the XI is unlikely to come under question when fit.

KKR also seem to have been grooming him for the role, naming him vice-captain this season. He already has leadership experience too, having captained Uttar Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy since 2024. While he is yet to lead a side in T20 cricket and has struggled for runs of late, Rinku has repeatedly shown the temperament to excel under pressure and has impressed with his maturity on the field.

He is also the only Indian player in the current KKR squad who combines a guaranteed place in the XI with genuine long-term captaincy potential. Appointing an overseas skipper comes with its own challenges, as teams are often reluctant to drop their captain despite the restriction of only four overseas players. An Indian captain offers greater flexibility, making Rinku the strongest contender to succeed Rahane.

There is also a wider message KKR would need to consider. The franchise has already named Rinku vice-captain, suggesting they see him as part of their leadership group. Overlooking him now could risk a repeat of 2018, when long-serving Robin Uthappa was passed over after Dinesh Karthik was appointed captain in his first season with the franchise, leading to a reported strained atmosphere in the side, something they should avoid.

The surprise packages

Rovman Powell

If KKR are looking for a captain with proven leadership experience, Rovman Powell is among the strongest candidates. He led West Indies in 37 T20Is between 2022 and 2024, winning 19, and also captained the side in three ODIs. Seen as Andre Russell's replacement down the order, Powell arrives with a wealth of T20 experience, having scored 6,520 runs at a strike rate of 141.43, with one century and 26 fifties, while also chipping in with 27 wickets. He has also been in excellent recent form, scoring 1,889 runs at a strike rate of 151.12 since January 2025.

However, Powell did not enjoy the best of campaigns for KKR this year, striking at 134.75 across 11 matches and failing to cement his place in the XI. That is where his case for captaincy weakens. With only four overseas players allowed in the XI, appointing Powell to lead would naturally reduce KKR's flexibility. The franchise would need to play him throughout the season, even if conditions or form called for a different combination, thus reducing tactical flexibility.

Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine has plenty working in his favour. He is one of the first, if not the first, names on KKR's teamsheet, remains one of their biggest match-winners, and has been with the franchise since 2012. Beyond the IPL, he has also represented several Knight Riders teams around the world, making him the global face of the franchise.

He also brings leadership experience, having captained 30 T20 matches. However, his record is modest, with 10 wins and 20 defeats, and at 38, he would only be a short-term option rather than someone KKR could build around for years.

If KKR are looking for a stop-gap captain before the next mega auction, Narine could be a sensible choice. However, appointing a short-term skipper would only delay the search for a long-term leader. Having already gone down that route with Rahane, KKR may now prefer to invest in a captain they can build the team around for the long term.

The big gambles

KL Rahul

KL Rahul would tick several boxes for KKR. The franchise are likely to be in the market for an Indian wicketkeeper-batter at the next mega auction, and Rahul's experience as an IPL captain, coupled with his star value, would make him an obvious fit. He would also bring the kind of marquee Indian name KKR have arguably lacked in recent seasons.

The catch is that Rahul may never become available. Delhi Capitals are unlikely to let go of one of their biggest names. Even if he did, there would be questions over whether captaincy would be the right move. Rahul's leadership spells with Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants drew mixed reviews, while he has looked noticeably freer with the bat since joining Delhi without the burden of captaincy.

In the last two seasons as a non-captain, Rahul has struck at 149.72 and 174.41 respectively, the highest strike rates of his IPL career since 2018, making it fair to question whether handing him the captaincy again would be the right move.

Hardik Pandya

If KKR want a statement signing, few names are bigger than Hardik Pandya. An Indian superstar, proven IPL-winning captain and genuine three-dimensional cricketer, he would transform both the team's balance and its commercial appeal.

Even if he were to be traded to KKR, one of the teams reportedly interested in signing him, he would arrive after an underwhelming stint as Mumbai Indians captain, with the side winning just 15 of the 35 matches under his leadership. There are also concerns over Hardik's fitness and whether he could manage his IPL workload ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Those uncertainties make him a risky proposition for a franchise looking to appoint a long-term captain.
