During the third Test, at Mount Maunganui against the West Indies, Devon Conway and Tom Latham became the first pair of openers to score a hundred in each innings of the same first-class match.
Latham (137) and Conway (227) had already set a plethora of records during their first-innings opening stand of 323. Building on that partnership, New Zealand declared on 575-8. Despite Kavem Hodge’s resilient 123 not out, the West Indies folded for 420 as Jacob Duffy claimed 4-86.
Latham and Conway came out on the fourth morning with an eye on declaration. Conway made exactly 100 this time and Latham 101, as New Zealand set the West Indies 462. At stumps on the fourth day, the visitors were 43-0.
Latham and Conway amassed 544 between them across the two innings, the second-highest aggregate between both openers from the same side in a Test.
This was also the first instance of two openers of the same side scoring two hundreds in the same match – not only in Test cricket but even first-class cricket. However, there have been a few instances of two openers scoring three hundreds and a ninety between them.
