West Indies pulled off a heroic draw in the first Test of their three-match series against New Zealand in Christchurch. Here’s how the World Test Championship points table looks after the result.
Few had given the visitors a chance to get anything out of the game after New Zealand set them a 531 to win in the fourth innings. But Shai Hope, Justin Greaves and Kemar Roach dug deep to pull off a monumental draw, finishing the fourth innings on 457-6.
Hope scored a second Test century in three innings, Greaves completed a rare fourth-innings double hundred, while Roach survived reviews and appeals, at one point playing 73 consecutive dot balls, to ensure West Indies take at least four WTC points from the match.
New Zealand batted first in Christchurch after Roston Chase put them in. Kane Williamson hit a 52 and Michael Bracewell 47 before they were bowled out for 231. West Indies then conceded a 64-run first-innings deficit, bowled out for 167 with Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Hope hitting fifties.
As conditions became much more conducive for batting, Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham scored big hundreds, enabling New Zealand to declare for 466 and hand West Indies an improbable 531 to chase. The visitors came close to achieving the target, losing just two wickets on day five, with Greaves and Roach adding 180 runs off 410 deliveries for the seventh wicket.
