Warwickshire pulled off a remarkable run chase in the One-Day Cup, overhauling Somerset’s 309 without a single batter making more than 50.
Batting first, Somerset, led by opener Tom Lammonby’s hundred, posted 309-8 at Taunton. Skipper James Rew scored a quickfire 81 in 69 balls, hitting nine fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 117.39. His brother Thomas Rew also chipped in with a 29-ball 41 as the two brothers continued their form in the tournament.
In reply, Warwickshire lost Ed Barnard at the team score of 36, but opener Rob Yates (47) and Zen Malik (44) stitched together 65 runs for the second wicket before the former was dismissed. Warwickshire kept losing regular wickets, and were 243-6 at one stage, needing 67 runs in the last 57 deliveries, before Jake Lintott saw the team through.
Batting at No.8, Lintott smashed 50 in only 36 balls, hitting one six at a strike rate of 138.88. At the other end, Kai Smith (45* in 53) held fort, as Warwickshire completed a rare run chase with four batters scoring between 44 and 47, and no one making more than 50.
To put into context how unique the batting scorecard for Warwickshire was, only once have four batters made scores between 40 and 50 in a successful run-chase in ODI cricket. Five batters have never done so together.
Warwickshire were also aided by 27 extras, including 13 wides, six of which were conceded by left-arm quick Alfie Ogborne. Overall, it was the side’s second-highest List A run-chase this century.
Lintott, who has a List A batting average of 27.69, had scored 122 and 50* for Warwickshire’s second XI against Kent last month while opening the innings.
Currently, both Warwickshire and Somerset are tied with points in the One-Day Cup table, with three wins out of five games each. However, Somerset are second due to a better Net Run Rate.
