Worcestershire win thrilling One-Day Cup final against Hampshire

In a rain-affected match, Worcestershire fielded first and kept a check on Hampshire's scoring despite a steady hundred by opener Ali Orr (110 off 130). None of the other Hampshire batters crossed 40 as they finished their quota of 45 overs at 237-7. Currie, who came in No.7, remained unbeaten on 10 off 15 balls. Matthew Waite with his 3-60 was the pick of the bowlers for Worcestershire.

More rain breaks meant the match was further shortened to 27 overs, with Worcestershire being set a DLS-revised target of 188. They lost two wickets early, by the score of 31, but Ethan Brookes' 34-ball 57 from No.5 took them within touching distance of the target. He was dismissed in the 26th over, with his team needing 20 runs off 10 balls.

Waite replaced Brookes and played a stunning, match-winning five-ball cameo of 16. With four needed to win off the last three balls, new batter Henry Cullen was dropped at the boundary by Kyle Abbott, but the former South African speedster touched the rope and conceded the game and the title. This was Hampshire's second final defeat of the season after losing the T20 Blast title-decider to Somerset last week.

Scott Currie shines with solo-effort five-wicket haul

Currie, who was recently picked for the England T20 squad to face Ireland, was the lone ranger with the ball for Hampshire. Released from the squad after not being in contention for the first XI, Currie nearly bowled his side to victory in the One-Day Cup final.

He first dismissed opener Daniel Lategan caught behind in the seventh over of the chase, before removing captain Jake Libby in similar fashion in the 20th over. Returning for the penultimate over, Currie got rid of Brookes - caught behind again - with the second delivery, before finishing the over off with two back-to-back wickets that reduced Worcestershire to 175-7, leaving them 13 to get off the last over.

Currie finished with figures of 5-34 in six overs, his first five-wicket haul in List A cricket. He has also played three ODIs for Scotland, two against Canada and one against the UAE, all coming in March 2024 at the World Cup League 2.
