Archie Vaughan celebrates scoring first professional hundred

Teenage all-rounder Archie Vaughan scored his maiden professional hundred in Somerset's One Day Cup win over Northants today (August 26), securing his side's place in the knockout rounds of the competition.

Nineteen-year-old Vaughan, who is the son of England great Michael Vaughan, starred with an unbeaten century from the top of the order in Somerset's chase. Opening the batting with Tom Lammonby, the pair put on 168 before Lammonby was dismissed caught and bowled by Rudolph van der Merwe for 83. Vaughan struck 13 fours on his way to three figures, as he and fellow Somerset youngster James Rew saw the side over the line.

It was Vaughan's first professional century, having signed his first contract at Taunton last year. After making both his List A and first-class debut in 2024, Vaughan went on to captain England U19s on their tour of South Africa earlier this year, before also featuring in their home series against India. While a talented top-order batter, Vaughan has also marked himself out as a spin bowler with high potential. He took his second six-wicket-haul in U19 cricket this summer, equalling Graeme Swann's record as the only other England U19 player with more than one six-for.

He has threatened to break three figures with the bat previously for Somerset, falling five runs short of a ton against Yorkshire in another One Day Cup game earlier this month.

His innings today came in response to Northants being bowled out for 238, with Somerset's victory being secured with 26 balls to spare and eight wickets remaining. Having now completed their group matches, Somerset have secured a One Day Cup quarter finals place by winning five of their seven matches. They will face either Middlesex or Warwickshire on home soil in the crunch clash on Thursday.
