Asa Tribe slams 175 to rescue Jersey from 15-4

On Thursday (August 28), Jersey and Papua New Guinea faced off at the Farmers Cricket Club Ground in St Martin, in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League A. PNG won the toss and chose to field – they struck in the first over as Kabua Morea got rid of Harrison Carlyon, bringing Tribe out to the middle.

Inside four overs, Jersey's innings was in disarray. Nick Greenwood, Josh Lawrenson and Asa's elder brother Zak all returned to the pavilion, with the team score reading 15-4.

No.6 Jonty Jenner then contributed three to a fifth-wicket stand of 33, as Tribe set about repairing the damage virtually single-handedly. He received some support from Jake Dunford (23) and Julius Sumerauer (28), but things looked bleak as he made his way to 99, before the ninth wicket fell with the team score at 183.

No.11 George Richardson kept out the last two deliveries of the 41st over, before Tribe made it to his fifth List A century in the 42nd. Thereafter, the 21-year-old put on an exhibition of batting with the tail. Aided somewhat by PNG's field sets, Tribe was able to effectively farm the strike and go after the bowling for nearly 10 overs.

Richardson faced only eight balls in the last-wicket partnership, and did not score as Tribe made 76 of the 78-run stand himself. After taking 25 runs off the 49th over of the innings, he perished on the first delivery of the final over, caught at long-off to give Kabua Morea a three-wicket haul.

122*, 131*, 175: Asa Tribe scores third century in a week

Tribe's score of 175 is his highest in List A, or even professional, cricket (this match does not have ODI status). It continues an incredible run of form in 50-over cricket, though.

On August 22, Tribe made an unbeaten 122, opening the batting for Glamorgan against Worcestershire in England's One-Day Cup, even as his side went on to lose. In their next game on August 26, he went one better, scoring an unbeaten 131 to help his side chase 275 with 26 balls to spare.

With Glamorgan's campaign coming to an end, Tribe was free to join up with the Jersey squad for the Challenge League A campaign, which had begun on August 21 – they beat Kenya by seven wickets, tied with Kuwait and defeated Denmark by 89 runs before he arrived for the PNG face-off.

In 26 List A matches now, Tribe has amassed 1,293 runs at an average of 61.6. This includes five ODIs, in which he has made 237 runs at 59.3.
