Recalled England international Rehan Ahmed continued his fine all-round form with a rare double in The Hundred on Wednesday (August 27).
Batting first at Trent Bridge, Birmingham Phoenix got off to a rapid start against hosts Trent Rockets, reaching 36 runs from 20 balls. However, Rehan Ahmed dismissed a dangerous-looking Will Smeed for a 12-ball 23. The dismissal triggered a collapse as the Rockets bounced back into the match, restricting Phoenix to 111-9. Rehan struck twice more, eliminating Jacob Bethell (0) and Benny Howell (3), to finish with figures of 3-15 – his best bowling performance in The Hundred men’s competition.

The Rockets had a poor start to the run chase, losing opener Tom Banton for just one run. That brought Rehan to the crease at No.3. He scored a 23-ball 37, laced with five fours and a six. The brisk cameo proved to be a decisive factor in the low-scoring thriller as the Rockets stumbled to 89-6, before Ben Cox (batting at No. 8) guided them to victory off the penultimate ball with three wickets remaining.
This was his second-highest score in the competition, falling just shy of his career-best of 45 not out against Manchester Originals earlier in the league stage.
The Rockets head into the Eliminator against Northern Superchargers with six wins from eight matches, the same as table-toppers and defending champions Manchester Originals.
Rehan Ahmed continues brilliant all-round run
Rehan’s performance marks the seventh instance of a player achieving the double of scoring 30-plus runs and taking a three-wicket haul in a men’s Hundred match. Sam Curran is the only player to have achieved this feat twice, with his latest occurrence coming against Southern Brave earlier this season.
This extends Rehan’s dream domestic season. He has so far scored 760 runs in the 2025 County Championship at an average of 58.46, including five hundreds – the joint-most by any player. Besides being Leicestershire’s highest run-getter, he is also second in the team's wicket-takers' charts, with 23 scalps at an average of 19.00.
In the T20 Blast this year, the England spinner’s batting prowess was also on full display. He tops Leicestershire’s run-scoring leaderboard with 300 runs at an average of 42.85 and a strike rate of 136.98, including two half-centuries. He has also contributed with the ball, taking eight wickets at an average of 27.00 and an economy rate of 9.00. Rehan, who last played for England in December 2024, has been recalled for the upcoming South Africa and Ireland white-ball series.
