Mumbai captain Siddhesh Lad struck a fourth consecutive first-class ton in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Delhi to join an elite list of Indians.

Siddhesh Lad scores fourth Ranji Trophy century in a row

Batting first in the encounter, Delhi could manage just 221 runs despite a century from opener Sanat Sangwan. Only three more Delhi batters got into double digits as right-arm pacer Mohit Avasthi picked up a five-wicket haul on the first day.

Mumbai, in reply, were reduced to 18-2 and then 44-3 when Lad joined Musheer Khan in the middle. The duo added 63 runs, with Musheer completing his fifty in the process.

The stand-in skipper, replacing Shardul Thakur after the mid-season break also built a 136-run sixth-wicket partnership with Suved Parkar, and brought up a fourth consecutive first-class ton during the stand. Mumbai finished their first innings at 317 to take a 96-run lead.

Lad had notably played a 104-run knock in the first innings of Mumbai’s nine-wicket win over Hyderabad as the Ranji Trophy resumed earlier this month. Before the break, he had registered consecutive hundreds against Himachal Pradesh (127) and Puducherry (170), both of which came in innings wins.

With four back-to-back first-class hundreds, the middle-order batter joined the likes of Vijay Merchant and Sachin Tendulkar, among many other Indian legends, to have achieved the feat. Parthiv Patel has the most consecutive FC hundreds by an Indian batter, with five. The world record is six in a row, achieved by CB Fry (1901), Don Bradman (1938/39) and Mike Procter (1970/71); Lad still has a chance to equal this.

This knock was also Lad's fifth century of the season, a feat only previously accomplished by two Mumbai batters – Rusi Modi in 1944/45 and Sachin Tendulkar 50 years after that.
