Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga broke an ODI world record on Saturday (July 5) against Bangladesh.

In the second ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the visitors elected to bat first and posted 248 on a traditionally slow and turning surface. Opener Parvez Hossain Emon top-scored with 67, and Towhid Hridoy also made a half-century.

Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka early, but looked well and truly on track in the chase as Kusal Mendis smashed a 20-ball fifty, helping them to 75-2 in the Powerplay. In the middle overs, they began to come unstuck, slipping from 82-2 to 132-6 against the spin of Tanvir Islam, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shamim Hossain.

In at No.8 was all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. Off his second delivery, he drove Tanvir down the ground for a single, and upon completing it, set a new world record.

That was Hasaranga's 1,000th run in ODI cricket, to go with his 106 wickets. It made him the 70th man, and 86th player overall, to complete the all-round double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in the 50-over format; doing so in record time.

      Wanindu Hasaranga breaks world record

This was his 65th ODI, meaning he beat former South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock's world record of 68 matches to complete the double. Hasaranga had crossed the 100-wicket mark in the previous match, but was dismissed for 22, leaving his career tally on 999 until this match. Had he completed the double then, he would have been only the second man after Pollock to score his 1,000th run and take his 100th wicket in the same ODI.

The record in women's ODIs is held by Australia's Ellyse Perry, who took 70 matches to complete the double.

His stay in this game did not last long, though. He was dismissed for 13 off 16 as Sri Lanka were reduced to 170-8, before Janith Liyanage and Dushmantha Chameera began to revive the chase.
