Sri Lanka elected to bat first in the decider, and despite losing Nishan Madushka early, made a solid start. At 100-3 in the 21st over, skipper Asalanka joined Kusal Mendis in the middle. The pair put on 124 runs in 117 balls, eventually scoring 58 and 124 respectively. Sri Lanka finished on 285-7.

Bangladesh's chase never really got off the ground. There was little resistance apart from a 42-run stand between Parvez Hossain Emon (28) and Towhid Hridoy (51) for the third wicket, as they fell 99 runs short. Sri Lankan quicks Asitha Fernando and Dushmantha Chameera took six wickets between them.

This marked Sri Lanka's eighth consecutive ODI series win at home, a run stretching back to 2023. This impressive form in familiar conditions has seen them rise steadily up the rankings.

In the last update on Sunday (July 6), they had slipped from fourth to fifth following defeat in the second ODI. They remain in fifth, but now just one rating point behind Pakistan. Bangladesh's position also remains unchanged. They had made it to ninth after their victory, and remain there for now – only narrowly ahead of tenth-placed West Indies.

India remain top of the table, with New Zealand and Australia in second and third respectively.
