Sri Lanka have replaced retired Angelo Mathews with left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage for the second Test against Bangladesh, scheduled from July 25 to July 29 in Colombo.
Fast bowler Vishwa Fernando has also been added to the squad ahead of the match, which is part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship. Milan Rathnayake, who picked up four wickets in the first Test, will not be available for the second due to a left side strain.
Dunith Wellalage replaces Angelo Mathews
Wellalage, who made his Test debut against Pakistan in 2022, has featured in only one Test match to date but is yet to take a wicket in the format. The promising all-rounder has played 29 ODIs, picking up 37 wickets and making 379 runs at 22.29. His breakthrough performance came in the Asia Cup against India in 2023, when he took 5-40, including the dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. He has also played four T20Is, but has yet to leave a mark.
Wellalage has played 34 first-class matches, with 104 wickets at 27.24 and 1,140 runs, made at an average of 28.50. He has scored six fifties and has as many five-fors in red-ball cricket.
His inclusion comes following the retirement of veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews from Test cricket. Mathews played his final Test during the first match of the ongoing series, held in Galle from June 14 to June 21.
The match ended in a draw, with rain interruptions preventing a result despite Bangladesh holding the advantage for much of the game.
Fernando, a left-arm fast bowler, returns to the Test setup for the first time since December 2024, and has 79 wickets to his name from 27 games.
Following the second Test, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will play a white-ball series comprising three ODIs on July 2, 5, and 8, followed by three T20Is on July 10, 13, and 16.
