Chloe Tryon celebrates while playing for South Africa

South Africa all-rounder Chloe Tryon put in a remarkable performance in her side's tri-series win over Sri Lanka today, scoring a half-century as well as taking a five-wicket-haul which included a hat-trick.

South Africa were in trouble in the match, having been reduced to 127-6 batting first before Tryon joined Annerie Dercksen at the crease. The No.7 and 8 pair put together a partnership of 112 runs, with Dercksen registering her first international century and Tryon her 14th ODI half-century. Dercksen was dismissed with score at 239-7 but Tryon continued to attack, whacking three sixes off the first three balls of the penultimate over before she was out for 74 attempting a fourth.

That partnership and Tryon's late innings aggression meant South Africa set Sri Lanka a target of 316 to win. Having lost to them earlier in the tournament, South Africa were already out of contention before the game to reach the tri-series final against India on Sunday (May 11).

Sri Lanka started well in the chase, scoring 51 off the first nine overs before the first wicket fell courtesy of Tryon. She drew a loose drive from Hasini Perera and the ball was caught by Dercksen at cover. She struck again four overs later, getting the second opener Vishmi Gunaratne with another loose shot, the ball caught at backward point this time.

The highlight of Tryon's performance came in the 42nd over of the game, however, with a Sri Lanka win still not out of the question at 227-6. Tryon dismissed Dewmi Vihanga off the first ball of the over, bowling a full ball which was caught brilliantly by Nadine de Klerk. Sugandika Kumari then hit her first ball straight to De Klerk again at backward point, leaving Tryon on the brink of a hat-trick. A faint nick through to the keeper from Malki Madara gave her the third.

That completed a record for Tryon, who became the first woman to take a hat-trick and score a half-century in the same ODI. She's also only the fifth player to score a half-century and take five wickets in a women's ODI.
