Sarfaraz Khan played a scintillating 73-run knock off just 22 deliveries in Mumbai’s last Syed Mushtaq Ali 2025 game against Rajasthan. But went unsold at the IPL 2026 auction.
Sarfaraz Khan had a strong SMAT 2025 season but still went unsold
Just an hour before his name went under the hammer at the IPL 2026 auction, Sarfaraz Khan, registered at a base price of INR 75 lakh, gave a perfect audition for the franchises looking for an attacking top-order Indian batter. But as it turned out, he went unsold in the first set, but could still return for the accelerated round.
Batting at No.3 and chasing a massive 217, Sarfaraz came to the middle in the fifth over following Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal. He took the attack to the Rajasthan bowlers, bringing up his fifty in 15 balls, the fastest for Mumbai in SMAT history, with two consecutive sixes off Rahul Chahar.
Sarfaraz took a liking to Chahar’s leg-spin, scoring 26 runs off seven deliveries against him. His 22-ball knock featured just two dots, with six boundaries and seven sixes. By the time he was dismissed in the 11th over, Mumbai were 152, having knocked down more than 70 per cent of the target.
This wasn’t a one-off outing, however, as Sarfaraz flourished in the top order in the 2025 SMAT season. He struck a 47-ball 100 against Assam, followed by fifties against Kerala, Haryana and then Rajasthan to finish with 329 runs in seven innings at a strike-rate of 203.
Mumbai chased down 217 against Rajasthan in 18.1 overs, with Ajinkya Rahane scoring a 41-ball 72 and Atharva Ankolekar hitting 26 off nine deliveries. This was Mumbai’s last SMAT game as they mathematically cannot take the top spot in their Super League group even if other results go their way.
