Australia took a 2-0 lead in the 2025/26 Ashes after defeating England by eight wickets in the day-night Test at Brisbane. Here’s how the World Test Championship table stands after the result.
A first Test century for Joe Root Down Under took England to 334 in the first innings, with Zak Crawley scoring 76. But none of the other batters got into the 40s, with Jofra Archer’s 38 the third-highest score of the innings.
In reply, Australia piled on the runs, with all of their batters scoring in double digits, without anyone completing a ton, and took a massive 177-run lead. The visitors started their second innings strongly with a 48-run opening stand, but they went down to 97-3 and then to 128-6, looking in danger of losing by an innings.
But Ben Stokes and Will Jacks held on in the first session on day four, making it England's first full batting session in Ashes 2025/26 where they did not lose a wicket. The duo added 96 runs for the seventh wicket in 221 deliveries to ensure Australia have to bat again for a win.
Needing 65 to win, the hosts lost Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne in the chase. Head chopped onto his stumps before Labuschagne was caught-behind off Gus Atkinson. Australia finished the match off in 10 overs to take a 2-0 series lead, Steve Smith finishing the match with a six.
