At The Oval on Thursday (August 21), Sam Curran and Jordan Cox stitched a decisive partnership in The Hundred to help Oval Invincibles gun down a massive total against Trent Rockets.
Chasing 172, the Invincibles were at 70-2, needing another 102 runs off 40 balls. Curran, freshly at the crease, had a slow start, reaching seven off 12, while his batting partner, Cox, had accumulated 28 off 20 by then. The Rockets' captain, David Willey, called for a strategic time-out, a break which proved to be beneficial for the Invincibles.

Curran, having played a dot off the first ball since the break, went on a rampage, hitting five sixes and a four in six legal balls to reach 41 off 18. Ten balls after the break, the equation for the Invincibles had come down to 51 off 30. Curran scored a 24-ball 54, hitting another four and a six to bring his team back into the mammoth chase. It was his second half-century on the trot, having smashed an unbeaten fifty against Southern Brave alongside a three-wicket haul three days earlier.
Curran and Cox added 96 off 42 for the third wicket. Against the Brave, the duo had stitched a 101-run partnership together in a successful chase.

Cox also went on to score his second fifty on the trot. Donovon Ferreira’s 14-off-five cameo came to an end on the 86th ball, with the Invincibles needing just eight more to win. Cox hit boundaries off the 88th and 89th balls to bring the Invincibles home. He remained unbeaten on 58 off 32, laced with five fours and four sixes. The Invincibles made 102 runs off their last 28 balls, winning by six wickets with 11 balls left.
For the Rockets, Joe Root's 76 off 41, which was his second fifty of the competition and his first since 2023, went in vain. They didn’t help their cause in the second innings either, conceding 17 extras. The Invincibles have made a superb start to their title defence, winning five of their six matches, and currently sit at the top of the table. The Rockets are in second place, with four wins in six.
