In The Hundred on Sunday (August 10), England spin bowler Rehan Ahmed again demonstrated his all-round prowess, helping Trent Rockets beat Northern Superchargers

In The Hundred on Sunday (August 10), England spin bowler Rehan Ahmed once again demonstrated his all-round prowess, helping Trent Rockets beat Northern Superchargers.

The Rockets, playing their first home game of the season, elected to field first and successfully restricted the Superchargers to 124-9. Akeal Hosein provided the first two breakthroughs, removing opposition openers Dawid Malan (2) and Zak Crawley (4) in the space of two balls. Sam Cook (2-32), Lockie Ferguson (1-18), and Rehan Ahmed (2-23) joined Hosein (2-28) as the bowlers who completed their full quota of 20 balls in the innings. For the Superchargers, captain Harry Brook top-scored with 45 off 30 balls.

During the Rockets’ run chase, Tom Banton gave a rapid start with a 25-ball 37 before being out in the 39th ball with his team at 57. Having chipped with two wickets earlier, Rehan, coming in at No.3, also played a decisive hand in the chase, hitting a 26-ball 31 with the help of two fours and a six. The Rockets chased down the total with five wickets and four balls remaining.

Rehan became just the fourth player to achieve the double of scoring 30-plus runs and picking up at least two wickets while batting in the top three in a men's Hundred match. He joined Sam Curran (68 runs and 2-16 for Oval Invincibles vs Manchester Originals, 2024), Will Jacks (68 runs and 2-22 for Oval Invincibles vs London Spirit, 2023), and Liam Livingstone (92* and 3-25 for Birmingham Phoenix vs Northern Superchargers, 2021).

The England spin-bowling all-rounder also batted at No. 3 in the Rockets' campaign opener against Birmingham Phoenix, contributing a 16-ball 25 in a 123-run chase that his team won comfortably by six wickets with 22 balls remaining.

Rehan continues stellar all-round form across formats

Rehan’s all-round form extends back to a stellar County Championship campaign for Leicestershire this season. Promoted to the top of the order, he unearthed his batting potential with five hundreds in 10 matches – the joint-most by any player across both divisions. He currently leads his team's run charts with 760 runs at an average of 50.66.

While starring with the bat, Rehan’s primary skill – his bowling – took a backseat until the match against Derbyshire, where he claimed 6-51 and 7-93 while also scoring 115 in the first innings. In the process, he became the first Englishman since 1980 to score a century and take 13 wickets in the same first-class match. He has so far taken 23 wickets at an average of 19 in the Championship season.

In the T20 Blast this season, Rehan has also excelled, scoring 300 runs at an average of 42.85 and a strike rate of 136.98, including two fifties, while also taking eight wickets at 27 runs apiece in nine matches.
