Sam Cook conceded the most expensive five-ball set in The Hundred during a match between Trent Rockets and Oval Invincibles on Thursday (August 21).
Having conceded just six runs from his first 10 deliveries, Cook came in to bowl another set with the Invincibles needing 83 off the last 35 balls. On strike was Sam Curran, who had teed off with three sixes in the previous five balls after having started with a score of seven off 12.
The first ball was overpitched down the leg side, going past the keeper for five wides. Another wide followed as Cook bowled too short, the ball going over the batter’s head. Curran then pulled the first legal delivery of the set for a six, followed by another four off the next.
Cook then overstepped, and Curran hit him for yet another six. The delivery went for eight runs in total, as a no-ball in The Hundred costs the bowling side two runs, rather than the usual one. The 68th ball also went for a six. The 69th went for two runs, with a dot ball to finish the set. The equation for the Invincibles after the set was 51 off 30. Just 10 balls earlier, they had needed 102.
Cook conceded 32 runs in total between the 66th and 70th balls of the Invincibles' innings. That's the most expensive five-ball set in The Hundred ever. He went past Trent Rockets' Rashid Khan's unwanted previous record of 30 runs against Southern Brave in 2024. On the previous occasion, Kieron Pollard struck five sixes on the trot.
