Afghanistan superstar Rashid Khan had a rare off-day in The Hundred on Tuesday (August 12), setting a couple of unwanted records.
Rashid Khan concedes 59 runs to break all-time Hundred record
Birmingham Phoenix hosted Oval Invincibles at Edgbaston on Tuesday, with the hosts electing to field first. The defending champions had an inauspicious start, as openers Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye departed in the first 15 balls.
Jordan Cox then held the innings together with 44 off 30, before South African Donovan Ferreira walked in at 77-4 and smashed 63 off 29 balls – including four fours and six sixes – to lift them to an imposing 180-8.
Birmingham were 38-1 after 25 balls when Rashid came into the attack for the Invincibles. He conceded eight off his first set of five, after Will Smeed hit the last one for six. His second, however, went for 17 courtesy of two sixes from Joe Clarke and a four from Smeed.
Rashid conceded another boundary in his third set as Liam Livingstone tickled one down the leg side for four. His final set though, saw the floodgates open. With the Phoenix needing 61 off 25, Livingstone tore into the leggie, hitting three sixes in a row between two fours to take 26 off the set.
Rashid's 20 balls cost the Invincibles 59 runs, the most expensive spell in the history of the competition – overtaking David Wiese and David Payne's joint-record of 53 runs.
It was also the most runs Rashid has ever conceded in a T20 match (despite his maximum quota here being 20 balls, instead of 24). He had conceded over 50 in an innings on eight previous occasions, with the most expensive being his 1-55 for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kings XI Punjab in the 2018 IPL.
Livingstone's blitz made the Phoenix's task significantly easier, and despite a wobble in the final set of the match, they got over the line with two balls to spare as Benny Howell hit Saqib Mahmood's hat-trick ball for four.
