ECB finalises sale in six Hundred franchises

At the end of 2024, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) opened the bidding to outside investment for stakes in the eight teams in The Hundred, the board's franchise competition which began in 2021. With the close involvement of the English counties in the running of these franchises, the income generated by these sales has been much-anticipated, promising to add an injection of cash into the domestic game in England. ECB chief executive Richard Gould even called it a "once-in-a-generation" chance.

On Wednesday (July 30), the ECB released a statement saying, “The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today confirmed a landmark achievement in the evolution of The Hundred, with deals now complete with the first six strategic partners for The Hundred teams.

The remaining two are set for formal completion at a later date. They remain on track, in line with the ECB having offered investors the option of completing later.”

The statement also confirmed that investors will operate their franchise in partnership with the respective county, and that they will take over operational control from October 1, 2025. Over £500 million is set to be shared between the professional counties and grassroots cricket initiatives.
