Mitchell Santner asked the umpire to go upstairs to check a possible run-out, for a decision that eventually went against him.
Santner, who was batting on seven runs for the Trent Rockets in a 215-run chase against Birmingham Phoenix, was on the non-striker’s end when Tom Banton hit the ball straight down the ground on the 85th ball of the innings. The ball was intercepted by Donovan Ferreira. Santner, who came back for the second, had to put in a dive at the non-striker’s end.
The umpires were convinced of Santner having made it back to his crease. However, the New Zealand white-ball skipper asked them if they were sure and they eventually went upstairs - a decision that is almost always initiated by the on-field officials. As it turned out, the left-handed all-rounder was found short of his crease and had to walk back to the pavilion.
The commentary box burst into laughter, stating that Santner should never have asked the umpires to go upstairs. "The Kiwis are just too nice,what's going on?" quipped simon Doull.
“Would you believe it? The review asked by the batsman, and he receives his fate,” said Ravi Shastri on commentary.
Highest-scoring match in The Hundred history
The match between Birmingham Phoenix and Trent Rockets also broke the record for the highest-scoring match in the history of The Hundred. Phoenix, being put in to bat first, scored a mammoth 214/4 on the back of Joe Clarke’s 33-ball 68. Will Smeed, Rehan Ahmed and Donovan Ferreira also chipped in with scores of 51, 48 and 22*, respectively, all striking above 180.
In response, the Trent Rockets started brilliantly with a 65-run stand off 29 deliveries by Finn Allen and Ben Duckett. Tom Banton top-scored with a 32-ball 67, but no other batter could take charge. Scott Currie and Usman Tariq picked up two wickets each, with Tim David even showing unhappiness with the Pakistan spinner's action after getting dismissed. Eventually, the Rockets fell shot by 10 runs.
418 runs were scored in the fixture, the most number in a single The Hundred fixture. The previous record was 397, which was set with the fixture between the Manchester Originals men and Southern Brave men in August 2023.
