Which matches could Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025/26?

Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Vijay Hazare Trophy

According to reports, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are expected to feature in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Rohit Sharma was recently replaced as India's ODI captain by Shubman Gill. During the squad announcement for India's white-ball tour of Australia, chief selector Ajit Agarkar also made the point about players being available for domestic cricket as and when possible.

“I think we made it clear a year, or a couple of years back, now, that whenever players are available, they should be playing domestic cricket. I mean, that’s the only way you’ll keep yourself sharp and playing cricket, if you’ve got a long enough break. Whether that’s possible with the international cricket you’re playing or not, that only time will tell, but if the guys are free, they should be playing domestic cricket.”

Will Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play Vijay Hazare Trophy?

According to a PTI report, both Rohit and Kohli, who have retired from Test and T20I cricket, are expected to play some rounds of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December-January.

"The Vijay Hazare Trophy starts on December 24. There will be six rounds of games for Mumbai (before the start of the New Zealand ODIs). Rohit will be expected to at least play three rounds before linking up with the squad. Ditto for Virat," the report quotes an anonymous BCCI source.

Which VHT matches could Rohit and Kohli play?

Following India's tour of Australia, South Africa are scheduled to visit India for an all-format series. The three ODIs will be played between November 30 and December 6. India's next ODI series after that will start on January 11, against New Zealand at home.

In between, seven rounds of the Vijay Hazare Trophy will be played - between December 24 and January 8. This is what the schedule for Mumbai (Rohit Sharma's team) and Delhi (Virat Kohli's team) will look like:

Vijay Hazare Trophy - Mumbai schedule

Date Opposition
December 24 vs Sikkim
December 26 vs Uttarakhand
December 29 vs Chhattisgarh
December 31 vs Goa
January 3 vs Maharashtra
January 6 vs Himachal Pradesh
January 8 vs Punjab

Vijay Hazare Trophy - Delhi schedule

Date Opposition
December 24 vs Andhra
December 26 vs Gujarat
December 29 vs Saurashtra

The PTI report only mentions the possibility of Rohit and Kohli playing three or four games out of these seven, with no further clarity on which of these games the two might play.

All this, of course, will only transpire assuming they don't announce their ODI retirements during or after the Australia tour, something which is also being speculated as a possibility.

When did Rohit and Kohli last play Vijay Hazare Trophy?

Rohit Sharma's last Vijay Hazare Trophy appearance came in the semi-final of the 2018/19 season when he made 17 off 24 opening alongside Prithvi Shaw, who scored 61 off 44 balls. That season, he played two VHT matches, having also played two in 2017 and one in 2013. He made his debut in the tournament in 2007, four months before making his India debut.

Kohli's last appearance in the tournament came much further back as compared to Rohit – in 2010. Batting at No.5 against Services, he played a quick cameo of 16 off eight balls in an innings where current BCCI president Mithun Manhas smashed 148 off 154. Incidentally, Kohli's VHT debut also came four months before his India debut, in 2008.
