Durham bowler Brendan Doggett looks on during day two of the Rothesay County Championship Division One match between Durham and Warwickshire at Banks Homes Riverside on April 12, 2025 in Chester-le-Street, England

Australia fast bowler Brendan Doggett has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against West Indies, with uncapped all-rounder Sean Abbott named as his replacement.

Doggett served as Australia’s travelling reserve for the recent World Test Championship 2025 final against South Africa. He was instrumental in South Australia’s 2024/25 Sheffield Shield triumph, their first in 29 years – finishing as the team’s second-highest wicket-taker with 33 scalps at an average of 24.15. His 11-140 in the final marked the best match figures in Shield final history.

After returning to the Test squad for the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in December – his first call-up since 2018 – he earned another selection for the three-Test Caribbean tour.

However, he has been ruled out of the Test series – beginning June 25 – due to a minor hip issue and will fly back to Australia. Before the WTC final, he featured in three County Championship matches for Durham, claiming nine wickets at 33.44.

Sean Abbott replaces Doggett

Replacing the quick is New South Wales all-rounder Sean Abbott. Since his Australia debut in 2014, Abbott has played 28 ODIs and 20 T20Is, claiming 33 and 26 wickets respectively. He was part of the Test squad that toured Sri Lanka earlier this year but remains uncapped in the format.

Abbott’s last red-ball outing came for NSW in March, where he took 6-99 to finish the Sheffield Shield season with 19 wickets at 21.94 in three matches. Since then, his only competitive cricket has been with Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League.

Doggett’s absence isn’t Australia’s only injury worry, with Steve Smith’s fitness also in doubt. Smith dislocated his finger while fielding in the slips during the WTC final. He will travel to the Caribbean but must wear a splint on his right little finger for up to eight weeks. His participation will depend on his recovery timeline.
