The five-match ODI series against New Zealand will be of extreme important for the West Indies as they aim for a direct qualification to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The West Indies have had their share of major ODI setbacks in recent years, the most significant of them being in 2023, when they weren't able to qualify for the ODI World Cup. Once again after three years, they find themselves staring at similar crossroads.
With the ODI World Cup scheduled to be played in 2027, the automatic qualification spots are beginning to take shape. Unlike the last ODI World Cup edition in which 10 teams participated, the one in 2027 will see 14 teams battle in the quest for ultimate glory.
How does automatic quallification of ODI World Cup work?
Qualification for the ODI World Cup is a simple, yet prolonged procedure. Full-member nations which host the tournament secure automatic qualification as part of the process, therefore South Africa and Zimbabwe have already taken their respective spots at the event.
Here comes the part which plays the most important role. Eight spots for the coveted tournament will be taken up by the top-eight teams in the ICC Men's ODI rankings (excluding the hosts), as positioned on the cut-off date (March 2027, in this case).
As on July 11, 2026, the West Indies are placed 10th in the rankings and will have to climb at least one position in order to secure direct qualification. South Africa are currently placed fourth, and Zimbabwe are 11th on the table. Hence, the Men in Maroon are effectively placed ninth in a race which values the top-eight teams.
The remaining four spots are then decided through the ICC World Cup qualifier, which is a 10-team tournament. These 10 teams consist of: the next two highest ranked teams in the ODI rankings (that did not qualify), teams advancing through the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and teams progressing from the Challenge League or the Qualifier Play-off pathway.

Five ODIs against New Zealand extremely crucial for the Windies
The West Indies lock horns against New Zealand at home in a five-match ODI series, which is extremely important for the hosts. Bangladesh, who are placed a position above the Caribbean outfit in the ICC ratings, stand on 83 points, whereas the West Indies are on 73.
That being said, Zimbabwe's recent series victory over Bangladesh has presented a ray of hope to Shai Hope & Co. to accumulate as many points as possible before the qualification deadline in March 2027.
Before the start of the ODI series between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, hosts Zimbabwe sat on 53 rating points, and Bangladesh on 87 (with the West Indies on 73). If Bangladesh had won the three-match ODI series, their rating would have pushed the West Indies almost out of the equation.
However, the series defeat has got their rating points down to 83, which would further decrease if they lose the last game of the series as well.
As per the ICC, a lower-ranked team beating a higher-ranked side counts for more. Since the West Indies are placed tenth on the rankings and New Zealand are second, if the home side pull off something special against the visitors, it will do them a world of good.
The West Indies will next travel to India for a three-ODI series in September, whereas Bangladesh are scheduled to play three ODIs against South Africa in December 2026.
