A new No.1 men's ODI all-rounder was crowned on Wednesday, after the latest update to the ICC player rankings.
Sikandar Raza becomes new No.1 all-rounder
With a 12-point rise in his all-rounder rating, Zimbabwe stalwart Sikandar Raza went past the 300-point mark for the first time ever. In the process, he overtook Afghanistan's Azmatullah Omarzai, ODI player of the year for 2024, to become the top-ranked all-rounder in the world.
This rise comes on the back off two solid performances in Zimbabwe's two ODIs against Sri Lanka earlier this week. In the first match, Raza took 1-48, before top-scoring for his side with 92 in the chase, although he was unable to take them over the line. The following game saw him score an unbeaten 59, before returning 0-46.
Other big movers in the all-rounder rankings from that series are Sri Lankan pair Janith Liyanage and Dilshan Madushanka.
Ben Curran rises 71 spots among batters
Raza's teammate, opening batter Ben Curran was by far the biggest mover in any category in the ODI rankings. He moved a whopping 71 spots up the ranks, to No.90 in the world. Curran made back-to-back half-centuries against Sri Lanka, scoring 70 and 79.
Among bowlers, South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj moved out on his own to the top of the rankings. For the past week, he and Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana had been tied at No.1, but Maharaj's 4-22 against England yesterday (September 2), combined with Theekshana's 0-47 and 0-45 against Zimbabwe, have separated the pair.
