England have climbed to second place in the latest ICC men’s Test team rankings following the annual update.

The new rankings factor in results from May 2024 onwards at full weight and matches from the preceding two years at 50 per cent.

Australia, the current holders of the World Test Championship, continue to lead the table with 126 points, giving them a 13-point gap from the second-best team, England.

ICC Test rankings: England climb to second spot

England’s ascent to the No. 2 spot has been driven by a successful run in the longest format over the past year, where they emerged victorious in three of their four Test series. They won nine of their 17 matches, with a win/loss ratio of 1.125.

England have also overtaken both South Africa and India in the table. South Africa now sit third with 111 points, while India have dropped to fourth with a rating of 105. The runners-up in the last two WTC editions, India have won just one of their last eight Tests, including a historic home whitewash against New Zealand.

There were no changes in the remaining positions of the top 10. New Zealand hold firm in fifth place, followed by Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, rounding out the table.

The highest team rating point ever achieved by a side in the Test rankings is 143, by Australia, with West Indies in second place, with 135 points.

According to the ICC, Ireland and Afghanistan have not played enough Tests to have an official ranking, but are provisionally 10th and 11th in the table.
