Piyush Chawla

Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has announced his retirement from all cricket.

Piyush Chawla retires

Chawla had been part of the Indian squad that won the 2007 World Twenty20 (later the T20 World Cup), though he did not play a game there. Four years later, he won the 2011 World Cup, thus achieving a rare “double” among Indians. Before that, he had been a finalist in the 2006 Under-19 World Cup.

In all, Chawla had 32 wickets from 25 ODIs at 34.90, and played seven T20Is. In Test cricket, his best performance came in his third (and last) match – the 4-69 against England at Nagpur in 2012/13. There were also seven T20Is, including his last international match, against England in 2012/13.

Chawla had a long, fruitful domestic career for Uttar Pradesh, with a stint for Gujarat in between. From 137 first-class games, he had 446 wickets at 32.82 to go with 5,486 runs at 30.99. With 35 wickets at 23.85 and 224 runs at 24.88, he played a crucial role in Uttar Pradesh’s maiden Ranji Trophy title, in 2005/06, his first season in first-class cricket.

Chawla was also part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad that won the IPL in 2014, one of his four franchises in the league, along with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians. His 192 wickets are the joint third-most in IPL history (along with Sunil Narine), after Yuzvendra Chahal (221) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (198).
