Watch: Madurai Panthers quick, Surya Anand, sealed a win for his side in dramatic fashion in the TNPL against Royal Kings yesterday (June 18), taking four wickets – including a hat-trick – in the penultimate over of the match.
The match itself, which took place in Salem, was going down to the wire. Panthers had posted 169 for Kings to chase in their innings, largely thanks to a 48 off 37 balls opening the batting from Balchander Anirudh. However, Anirudh was substituted out of the XI for impact player Anand at the inning break, and he lived up to that title.
With two overs to go in the chase, Kings looked comfortable. They needed 11 runs to win with four wickets in hand, and Sonu Yadav and Muhammed Adnan Khan had been ticking along for four overs. Anand came on to bowl the penultimate over, and ended the partnership immediately. He bowled a full ball, angling in to Yadav, taking out his middle and off stumps.
Still, three wickets in hand and only 11 to get off 11 balls looked like a good chance of a Kings victory. Valliappan Yudheeswaran came to the crease and blocked the first ball. The second, however, went straight through him, Yudheeswaran cramped for room by a ball that cut back in and the ball ricocheting off his inside edge onto the stumps. He was the first of Anand's hat-trick victims.
The second was Sachin Rathi, who was dismissed by the first ball he faced, squared up and nicking through to the keeper. Suddenly with only one wicket left and 11 still to get, No.11 Emmanuel Cherian found himself in the middle. He was undone first ball by a slow yorker, which snuck under his bat and hit the base of his off stump.
That wicket sealed an unlikely victory, and gave Anand an over which read: W0WWW. His overall figures were 3.5-0-24-4.
