Kiran Navgire

Kiran Navgire continued with her stunning run in the Indian domestic season, this time with a 58-ball 112 against North East Zone.

Yet another Kiran Navgire blitzkrieg

On October 17, Navgire blasted the fastest hundred in women’s T20 cricket, off only 34 balls. Scoring a hundred in a chase of 111 is a near-improbable task, but Navgire did exactly that. She finished on a 35-ball 106 not out as Maharashtra took only eight overs to beat Punjab.

Eight days later, her 42-ball 96 not out helped Maharashtra chase 159 against Mumbai with 29 balls to spare: the Mumbai attack comprised international bowlers like Sayali Satghare and Saima Thakor.

Maharashtra went on to win their first ever senior women’s T20 title by defeating Madhya Pradesh in the final. Navgire finished the tournament with 233 runs at a strike rate of 235. For perspective, the only batter to have crossed the 150-mark while scoring 200 runs was Shafali Verma (341 at 182), whom India called up to their World Cup squad and then the playing XI when Pratika Rawal got injured.

Selected for West Zone in the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Trophy, she now hit a 58-ball 112 with 13 fours and six sixes after North East Zone captain Debasmita Dutta won the toss and opted to field. With captain Anuja Patil also chipping in with a 28-ball 44 not out, West Zone amassed 201-4. The response never gathered momentum, and North East Zone finished on 75-8 as Satghare (2-13) and Patil (2-13) shared four wickets.

      Who is Kiran Navgire?

It is worth a mention that in 2021/22, Navgire – she used to play for Nagaland back then – hit a 76-ball 162 not out against Arunachal Pradesh, the first 150-plus T20 score by an Indian, male or female. It is still the third-highest individual score in women’s T20s. Her 16 sixes are still four clear of anyone else’s tally. The following season, she got an 88-ball 154 against Chandigarh – in a 50-over match.

Navgire plays for the UP Warriorz, and was part of the Indian squad that won the 2022 Asia Cup. She played the last of her six T20Is in that tournament.
