New Zealand’s Bevon Jacobs scored a fifth straight T20 fifty to equal the national record for the most consecutive half-centuries in the format on Monday (January 12).
Bevon Jaobs continues golden run of form
Auckland and Otago faced off in the Super Smash on Monday, with the latter batting first. Llew Johnson top-scored for them with a 44-ball 63, and received crucial help from Jamal Todd (24 off 10) and Jack Boyle (32 off 22), as they were bowled out for 159.
In reply, Auckland lost three quick wickets in a space of 10 deliveries, going from 29-0 to 32-3 by the fifth over, when Jacobs joined Mark Chapman in the middle. The duo stabilised the chase, adding 87 runs for the fourth wicket in 67 deliveries before Chapman was dismissed.
Jacobs, who was at 48 off 40 when Chapman departed, upped the ante to finish the games quickly. He completed his half-century in 42 balls with a boundary, and hit two more fours and a six in the over bowled by Jacob Duffy.
He hit another six in the next over and finished the proceedings with a boundary and a maximum to finish with 78 off 51. This was his fifth straight 50-plus score in T20s, as he equalled Devon Conway’s record for the most consecutive T20 fifties by a New Zealand batter.
In the lead-up to the aforementioned game, Jacobs had registered scores of 55, 54, 53 and 88* against Northern Districts, Wellington, Otago, and Canterbury, respectively. With half-centuries in all five Super Smash innings this term, the middle order batter currently sits atop the season’s run-scoring charts with 328 runs at 109.33.
Notably, Jacobs wasn't named in the New Zealand squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
