Several records tumbled during the second South Africa-West Indies T20I on Thursday, with the Proteas chasing down 222 with 15 balls to spare.

Batting first at the SuperSport Park at Centurion, the West Indies were led by opener Brandon King, who made 49 in 30 deliveries. Shimron Hetmyer (75 in 42) and Sherfane Rutherford (57* in 24) also contributed with impactful fifties, as the Windies posted 221-4 on the board.

In reply, the Proteas skipper Aiden Markram failed to get going, making 15 off 12 balls, before he was dismissed in the third over. His dismissal brought Ryan Rickelton to the crease, and what followed was mayhem. Along with Quinton de Kock, the duo put on 162 runs in just 71 deliveries, going at 13.69 runs an over, the fifth-fastest 150-plus partnership in men’s T20Is.

It was also de Kock’s eighth T20 hundred as a designated wicketkeeper - the most ever - as he continued his excellent form since reversing his retirement. The 33-year-old returned to the international setup in September 2025, scoring 302 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 188.75.

South Africa chase down 222 in 17.3 overs

De Kock was eventually dismissed for 115 off 49 balls, hitting as many as 10 sixes, to take his team close. Dewald Brevis departed soon after, but Rickelton - who struck his highest T20I score - and Jason Smith, finished off the chase in 17.3 overs, making it the quickest 220-plus run-chase by a Full Member in men’s T20Is. Overall, it was the fourth biggest win for a Full-Member nation in men’s T20Is when chasing more than 200, with the record being held by India, who recently chased New Zealand’s 208 with 28 balls remaining.

South Africa also recorded their second-highest successful run-chase in the format, with the highest being the total of 258 they gunned down against the West Indies at the same venue, in 2023. The Proteas, who had also claimed the first T20I in this series, also won just their second T20I series since the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the first since December 2024.

The third T20I will be played on January 31 (Saturday) at the Wanderers Stadium.
