The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed Mike Hesson's appointment as head coach of the national men’s white-ball team.

Hesson’s tenure will begin on 26 May 2025, a day after the Pakistan Super League is to end. He has previously been associated as a coach with New Zealand and Kenya, as well as IPL franchises Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Hesson is the head coach of defending champions Islamabad United in the PSL.

Hesson's selection follows a thorough review of multiple applications submitted for the position, which became vacant after Pakistan toured New Zealand in April. His appointment also follows a tumultuous few months in Pakistan cricket that saw former white-ball coach Gary Kirsten and Test coach Jason Gillespie resign within two months.

Aaqib Javed then took over as the interim head coach, with Gillespie accusing him of being a “clown” for undermining him and Kirsten “behind the scenes”. Gillespie also claimed that the PCB still owed him money for his services, to which the board stated that he breached the contract by quitting without serving the notice period.

Pakistan have won only one of their last eight ODIs, including losses in all their 2025 Champions Trophy games. Their have had a similar recent run in T20Is, with one win in the last eight games. They were eliminated from the first round of the T20 World Cup last year after a shock defeat to the USA, and also failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
