Against Leeward Islands in the West Indies Championship, Trinidad & Tobago captain-wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva scored his maiden first-class double hundred.
Joshua Da Silva double ton lifts Trinidad & Tobago
Evin Lewis had retired hurt early in the innings after Leeward Islands captain Justin Greaves won the toss and opted to field at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St John’s. By the time they reached 115, they lost three more wickets.
That was when Da Silva joined Amir Jangoo. The pair stretched the score to 247 by stumps and to 289 on the second morning, before Jangoo (83) and Lewis (who had returned to bat) fell in quick succession.
The unperturbed Da Silva then added 132 with Terrance Hinds (44). He found enough support from the tail to bring up his maiden double ton in first-class cricket. He was ninth out for 220, scored off 304 balls and studded with 29 fours and two sixes, and declared the innings closed immediately, on 522-9. For Leeward Islands, Karima Gore returned 4-86 (including Da Silva’s wicket) and Oshane Thomas 2-70.
This was the ninth first-class hundred for Da Silva, one of which was a Test century. His 220 was also the highest first-class score by a Trinidad & Tobago wicketkeeper as well as the joint-highest first-class score for Trinidad & Tobago since Daren Ganga’s 265 against Leeward Islands in 2004/05 (Jason Mohammed had 220 in the interim period, against the Combined Campuses and Colleges in 2013/14).
In response, Leeward Islands lost both openers within nine balls without a run on the board. They lost two more wickets before ending the day on 88-4. Gore has scored 60 of these runs and is still at the crease. With him is Greaves, on four.
