South Africa's Jorich Van Schalkwyk has become the first batter to hit a double-century in a youth ODI, days after bad light prevented him from breaking the same record.
Opening for South Africa U19s in the Tri-Nation U19s tournament in Zimbabwe, Van Schalkwyk started his account with intent, hitting three fours in the second over of the match against the hosts. Despite the young Proteas losing two wickets inside the first 10 overs of the innings, the 18-year-old prodigee continued at a high tempo, reaching his half-century off 48 balls. His second 50 was quicker, and he reached three figures from his 86th ball at the crease.
That hundred marked consecutive three figures scored for Van Schalkwyk, after he hit 164* against Bangladesh on Tuesday. The match against Bangladesh was curtailed by bad light, with 32 balls still left in South Africa's innings. That meant Van Schalkwyk was prevented from having shot at becoming the first U19 batter to score a 50-over double-century.
However, he made up for that today (July 25), reaching 200 from 145 balls with a boundary. He had already gone past the previous highest 50-over score by an U19 batter, which was Hasitha Boyagoda's 191 for Sri Lanka against Kenya in 2018. The highest for a South Africa U19 batter before Van Schalkwyk's efforts this week was scored by Jacques Rudolph in the 2000 U19 World Cup.
Van Schalkwyk was eventually dismissed for 215 in the 47th over of the innings. South Africa set Zimbabwe a mammoth 386 to chase.
