Jorich Van Schalkwyk scored his first List A hundred, playing for South Africa Emerging XI against Border in CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division Two on Sunday (February 22).

Jorich van Schalkwyk makes first senior ton

Van Schalkwyk, playing just his fifth List A game, opened the batting for the CSA Emerging XI in their first match of the season. He added 60 runs with his opening partner Adnaan Lagadien, who fell in the 15th over, and saw two more batters follow Lagadien in quick succession.

The top-order batter found an able partner in Paul James as the duo went about resurrecting the Emerging XI innings. They went on to add 128 runs for the fourth wicket, in 130 balls, with James completing his first-ever List A fifty, while Van Schalkwyk completed a maiden ton in the format.

The duo’s stand took the team past the 200-run mark, and when James fell in the 43rd over, they were well-placed to post a strong total. Van Schalkwyk only fell in the last over, with the team finishing at 270-7, whereas the opener scored 142 of 143 balls.

Border, in reply, were off to a steady start despite losing opener Wian Ruthven in the third over. They were 51-1 at the end of the powerplay and in a favourable position to complete the chase and start their title defence in style. But they would lose three wickets over the next two overs to be reduced to 55-4 in 12.

Makhaya Ntini’s son, Thando, was Border’s top-scorer with 49, which was also his career-best List A score, and was the last wicket to fall as the team were bowled out for 187 in 46 overs. Right-arm pacer Bandile Mbatha returned figures of 4-30 while left-arm spinner Sipho Potsane registered 3-37.

Van Schalkwyk, notably, holds the world record of being the only batter to hit a double century in Youth ODIs. He slammed a 153-ball 215 against Zimbabwe in Harare in July 2025 during a Tri-Nation U19s tournament, including Bangladesh as the third team.

Just three days before the double ton, Van Schalkwyk was batting on 164 against Bangladesh, having broken the national record for the highest Youth ODI score, when bad light had stopped play in the third game of a bilateral series.
