Biography

Amy Jones was born in Sutton Coldfield, and her first sporting steps were not with a cricket bat, but on the football field. As a youngster, she played for a boys’ team at Aston Villa, but it was at Walmley Cricket Club that she truly discovered her passion for cricket. By her mid-teens, she had earned a place at the England Women’s Academy in Loughborough, where she began training with some of the country’s brightest prospects.

Her persistence paid off in 2013 when she made her debut for England in both ODI and T20 formats. At that stage, her role was largely one of learning, as she played understudy to Sarah Taylor, one of the finest wicketkeepers in the women’s game. While opportunities were limited, Jones made the most of them, gaining valuable experience and securing a place in England’s squad for the 2014 T20 World Cup. That same year, she was awarded one of the first-ever ECB central contracts for women, a sign of the belief the selectors had in her potential.

Following Taylor’s retirement in 2019, Jones took over as England’s first-choice wicketkeeper, combining her tidy glovework with increasingly consistent performances with the bat. Her game also grew through stints in franchise cricket, most notably in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League. Leadership became another dimension of her career when she captained Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, guiding a squad that blended young talent with experienced internationals. She later brought those qualities to the England setup, stepping in as stand-in captain during the absences of Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt.
