Sufiyan Muqeem picked up yet another three-wicket haul in the Pakistan Super League, to take his tally to 16 in the last five T20 matches.
The left-arm wrist spinner has been in wonderful form in the tournament, picking up 16 wickets at a stunning average of 9.62 for Peshawar Zalmi. Muqeem did not have the greatest start in the PSL, going wicketless in the team’s opener against Rawalpindiz, but bounced back with figures of 4-32 against Kingsmen in the next game.
Muqeem’s form kept on getting better - he picked up three wickets against Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars, before picking up three each against Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators, the last of which was held today (April 15), at Karachi.
Introduced into the attack in the eighth over of the innings, Muqeem struck with the fifth ball, dismissing Rilee Rossouw with a quick googly. He returned to send back Shamyl Hussain and Khawaja Nafay, as Quetta fell from 62-2 to 120-6, with Mohammad Basit also picking up a three-for. However, Muqeem had superior figures, conceding 25 runs in four overs, while Basit gave away 36 in his four.
Muqeem currently tops the wicket-taking chart in the PSL, and is six scalps clear of second-placed bowlers Iftikhar Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi. His efforts have ensured that Peshawar are the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
Who is Sufiyan Muqeem, who has had a wonderful start to PSL 2026?
Muqeem made his T20I debut for Pakistan against Hong Kong in the 2023 Asian Games, after impressing in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup final against India, where he got 3-66. A major left knee injury meant he had to undergo surgery in early 2024, returning after a gap of nearly 10 months. He made headlines when he picked up 5-3 in 2.4 overs against Zimbabwe, a national record, in November 2024, which led to an ODI debut against South Africa, where he picked up 4-52.
Muqeem featured in the 2025 Asia Cup, where he played only two games as Usman Tariq and Abrar Ahmed emerged as Pakistan's first-choice spinners. He did not feature in the recent T20 World Cup, but has sparked a remarkable comeback in the PSL to strengthen his chances of an international recall.
