Zimbabwe first qualified for the World Cup in 1983, where they stunned Australia on ODI debut. Nine years later, in the 1992 edition, they beat England at the 1992 World Cup. That win helped their elevation to Full Membership status. Later that year, they played their first Test match.

By the late 1990s, they formed a unit that could compete with some of the best sides in the world. They qualified for the Super Sixes at both the 1999 and 2003 World Cups. Since then, unfortunately, they have had ordinary runs, predominantly for non-cricketing reasons.

In the T20 World Cup, Zimbabwe famously stunned Australia in 2007, but opted out of the 2009 edition. They lost their Full Membership status, which cost them a berth in the 2021 edition, while they could not qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup. At 2026, however, they had a dream run, going through the league stage undefeated to qualify for the Super Eights.
