England posted 252-6 that semi-final at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Their two-drop batter top-scored with 83 in 90 balls, but no one else made it to 35. South Africa bowled only 45 overs within the stipulated time, but as per the existing playing conditions, they were not penalised. They needed to chase 253 in 45 overs.

South Africa lost wickets at regular intervals after one of their openers made 46 in 52 balls. A belligerent middle-order batter hit 43 in 38 balls from No.6, but they needed another 47 when the sixth wicket fell. With 22 needed in 13 balls, it began to rain, leaving an all-rounder and the wicketkeeper at the crease. When match resumed, the target was changed to 22 off one ball, making the scoreboard one of the most iconic in cricket history.
