Defending champions Australia had won 10 matches on the bounce to qualify for the 2003 World Cup final. Barring England and (to some extent) New Zealand and Kenya, no team had come close to challenging them. In the league stage, they had bowled out India for 125 and taken 22.2 overs to chase down the target. India, too, had turned things around after that defeat: en route to the final, they had won the other nine matches.

The final, unfortunately, turned out to be a one-sided affair. After the openers added 105 in 14 overs, the Australian captain blasted 140 not out in 121 balls, while the No.4 remained unbeaten on an 84-ball 88. Australia amassed 359-2. An Indian opener smashed 82 in 81 balls in response, but it was the only fifty of the chase. Australia eventually won by 125 runs: the fielder who took the catch to end the World Cup was the same man who had hit the winning runs to clinch the 1999 edition.
