The first Youth Cricket World Cup was part of the Australian Bicentenary Celebrations, in 1988, and was organised by the Australian Cricket Board: it went by the name McDonald’s Bicentennial Youth World Cup. While the age restriction were not mentioned in the title, the players needed to be 19 or younger on January 1, 1988.

The tournament was revived 10 years later by the ICC, who expanded it to 16 teams – a count that has remained unaltered until 2026, just like the two-year gap. Since 2023, there has been a women’s edition as well. Unlike the men’s World Cups, which are played in the ODI format, the women’s U19 World Cups are T20I competitions.
