An All-India team first toured England in 1911 under the captaincy of Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala. The first genuinely strong English side – the MCC, led by Arthur Gilligan – toured India in 1926/27, months after the formation of the BCCI. Neither tour featured a Test match.

He stepped down for the game as well as most tour matches, allowing someone else to take charge. England, meanwhile, were led by an India-born captain who would be at the epicentre of the Bodyline controversy in Australia a few months later.
