Australia and New Zealand played the first-ever men’s T20I on February 17, 2005 at Eden Park in Auckland. The teams were not entirely serious about the format. New Zealand played in retro beige, while an Australian bowled an underarm ball and was promptly “red-carded” by Billy Bowden.

Two years later, the format had its first World Cup. By the turn of the decade, T20 and its franchise leagues had changed cricket’s economics, almost certainly for the foreseeable future. The World Cup has expanded to 20 teams over by the 2020s.
