The Laws of Cricket were first written in 1744, and first printed in 1755. The first dismissal mentioned in that version ran “If the Wicket is bowl’d down, it’s out”. Cricket has undergone many a change over centuries, but “bowled” continues to remain the first of all Laws of Cricket concerning dismissals.

That is perhaps because bowled is the simplest of all modes of dismissals to comprehend. After being out bowled, almost no batter stands their ground, for there is no purpose. It need not be a spectacle of flying or uprooted or cartwheeling stumps either: the ball can only trim a bail to uproot it. At times, the batter can be dismissed “played on” (some old scorebooks feature “nipt out”), but all these come under the broad umbrella of “bowled”.
