In this quiz, you have to answer ten questions on the stumping dismissal and some famous instances.

The caught-behind does credit the wicketkeeper, but it is not unique to that position. That honour lies with the stumping, a mode of dismissal that has been – over a long period of time – more common off spinners than fast bowlers.

Some wicketkeepers mastered the craft. Bert Oldfield, for example, affected 52 stumpings in 50 Tests – though part of that can be attributed to the fact that he kept wicket to two all-time great leg-spinners, Clarrie Grimmett and Bill O’Reilly.

The dismissal can also lead to controversy, most famously Alex Carey’s stumping of Jonny Bairstow off Cameron Green in the Lord’s Test match of 2023. There are some unusual incidents as well. Bert Strudwick stumped Ron Oxenham off Tich Freeman in a 1924/25 game between an Australian XI and the touring MCC. As the game meandered to a draw, Strudwick took the gloves off and came on to bowl, and had Oxenham stumped... by Freeman.
