Ted Dexter can be credited with the first “mainstream” rankings in cricket, in 1987. Devised initially for Tests, these were incorporated into ODIs in 1988. When T20Is began in the 21st century, it was inevitable that they would have their own rankings as well.

The ICC ratings – part of many a discussion and debate – are marks out of 1,000 for cricketers in a discipline in a specific format at any given point of time. A rating of 900 is truly rare, while 800 can be called exceptional. All-time ranks are determined on the highest ratings of the cricketers over the course of their careers.
