In 2026, India became the first host nation to win the Men’s T20 World Cup (Sri Lanka in 2012 were the only other hosts to make it to the final). They also became the first team to win the trophy thrice (the West Indies and England had won it twice each) as well as the first team to defend the title.

Bangladesh’s opting out resulted in Scotland playing in the World Cup, where they beat tournament debutants Italy, who in turn returned with a win against Nepal, who enthralled the Wankhede crowd with their exciting brand of cricket. Despite playing only five games, Sanju Samson won the Player of the Tournament award, while Will Jacks equalled Shane Watson’s record of four Player of the Match awards in a single edition.
