The position of captain in international cricket has always been hugely valued – perhaps even overvalued at times, in a strictly cricketing sense. But it has always been intertwined with politics and various off-field factors as well.
From the early days of international cricket, where captains were appointed almost exclusively on the basis of their social class (and places and periods where that was race instead), to the present-day where cricket is professional to an extent like no other time, it has changed significantly.

Today (August 1) is the birth anniversary of the first black man to be appointed West Indies' permanent captain – unheard of at the time that it happened, thanks to the cricket board's policy of only whites being allowed to do so.
