Test cricket saw its first one-wicket win at The Oval in 1902 – a match immortalised by Gilbert Jessop’s famous 76-ball hundred. Two Yorkshire all-rounders, both from the village of Kirkheaton, added 15 for the last wicket.

There were two more one-wicket wins that decade and another shortly after the First World War, but there were only two instances between 1922/23 and 1994/95. Since then, however, these wins have happened every few years.
